Members of the Region II EMS Directors Association,

I just got an email with the Region II Director’s Conference brochure for 2011.  It has prompted me to do something I have meant to do and should have done long before now.  At the 2009 Region II EMS Director’s Conference I was honored to receive the EMS Lifetime Achievement Award.  While this meant more to me than most could realize, I do have one regret that I would like to set straight.

When I received the award at the banquet I was totally unprepared to make any kind of statement.  When called on to do so my response did not reflect what this honor meant (and still means) to me.  Since I am much better at writing than speaking, I hope you will allow me this opportunity to set things straight.

Anyone who can say “My work is my hobby” will understand the career I’ve had in EMS.  It is simply what I was meant to do; my talents, abilities, and instincts have been perfectly suited to this profession.  Not only that, but the timing of events through the years have evolved in such a way to mold, challenge and encourage me. Some might say all of these factors are fate, circumstance or coincidence, but I personally view them as God’s plan for my life.  I feel strongly that anyone who follows that plan will succeed professionally, personally, and know great fulfillment.

I have also been blessed with many mentors and colleagues along the way that have provided support and friendship for which I will always be grateful.  I would like to accept this award not as a recipient, but a representative for all those in emergency services who have dedicated their lives to helping others in their hours of greatest need.

Getting such an award from one’s own peers---It doesn’t get any better than that.  To be honored by such honorable people is truly humbling.  I can only offer my deepest gratitude---not only for the award but for the profession it represents.
