The Y-12 Fire Department in situated in an industrial setting, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facility charged with the mission of reprocessing our nations' nuclear weapons, conducting state-of-the-art research in a wide variety of fields and supporting the DOE infrastructure.
The Y-12 Fire department provides ambulance response and transportation, fire suppression and systems maintenance, rescue operations, hazardous materials responses, and other fire related duties. Because of the nature of nuclear materials, Y-12 has the potential of dealing with metal fires, radiation and contamination incidents, and other situations not found on the regular fireground.
