ORNL Fire Dept

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Fire Department, operated by U.T. Battelle, LLC. operates two ambulances, one rescue truck, an incident command vehicle and two engines.  The ambulance director is Eric Loy, EMT-IV.  The service makes approximately 175 EMS runs per year in addition to providing fire and rescue support to the Laboratory.  They work closely with Y-12 Fire Department, Oak Ridge Fire Department (formerly ETTP Fire Department) and Anderson County EMS for mutual aid responses.

Regularly scheduled in-service training is provided through Roane State Community College to keep up the personnel’s CEU’s,  as well as site-specific training provided in-house by specially trained organizations to prepare for incidents unique to the laboratory.  The ambulance service provides a Class-A level ALS service to the population of the laboratory and immediate surrounding areas.

The department has a wide range of EMS skill levels that provides an ALS response on every incident.  The service works closely with an on-site medical facility staffed with several R.N.’s, 2 physicians as well as P.A.’s and Family Nurse Practitioners.  The facility is able to treat most minor injuries and medical problems as well as perform occupational health screening and simple lab blood work.

Dr. James Phillips, M.D. is the medical director for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the ORNL Fire Department ambulance service.  Dr. Phillips is a former Army physician and has developed the Lab’s EMS system into what it is today through the ORNL Fire Department’s EMS resources.
